The reduced-fat spreads from Skippy and Peter Pan look like peanut butter. They spread like peanut butter. The question is whether they contain enough nuts to be called peanut butter.
Rival Jif, the nation's top-selling brand, and peanut farmers claim that the new products are not the real thing because they contain fewer peanuts.
Jif does not offer a low-fat spread. Peter Pan's Smart Choice peanut butter contains 25 percent less fat. Skippy's Reduced-Fat peanut butter, which will arrive in stores this month, contains 30 percent less fat in the creamy version and 25 percent less in "super chunk."
