Amazon Molly owes her survival to a little secret shared by her fishy mate and men worldwide: Competition can increase sex appeal.
Amazon mollies are an all-female species of fish needing sperm merely to jump-start their reproductive systems. Then they discard that sperm and clone themselves.
For decades, they've baffled biologists, who thought surely the confused male fish who wasted sperm on the mollies would die out and the Amazons would follow.
But a team of scientists now says these males aren't confused at all. Their own lady fish flock to them when they spot them consorting with an Amazon molly.
