A new technique that more reliably detects breast cancer in younger women has been developed.

Gregory Faris from Stanford University, US used optical imaging to detect regions that were low in oxygen--a common feature of solid tumours.

Current screening methods employ x-ray mammography, which unfortunately does not penetrate the denser breast tissue in young women, making tumour detection less reliable.
