Ghana faces expulsion from the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme due to its serving as a transshipment point for rough diamonds smuggled from neighboring, war-torn Cote D'Ivoire. The Kimberley Process plenary session, held November 6-9 in Gaborone, Botswana, approved a plan to help Ghana strengthen its internal diamond controls to avoid this possible loss of its Kimberley Process status. In so doing, it addressed findings of a Kimberley Process review visit to Ghana and reports from a United Nations' Group of Experts on Cote d'Ivoire that diamonds mined in the rebel-held territory are entering international markets through Ghana.
