With a Baghdad appeals court confirming the death sentence handed down to former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein for crimes against humanity, a countdown has started to his execution within the next 30 days against a backdrop of escalating civil strife between Iraq's Shiite and Sunni communities.
Saddam Hussein's execution, more than three years since the overthrow of his Baath regime by US troops, is unlikely to have any direct impact on the civil war which is largely led by armed militias who take their orders from political parties and groups.
