It wasn't that long ago when the American bald eagle was on the brink of extinction. Estimated at more than 250,000 prior to 1800, fewer than 500 nesting pairs existed in 1967. It was then that the bald eagle was placed on the endangered species list.

Sparked by an awareness campaign spearheaded by the National Wildlife Federation in 1970, the bald eagle has made a remarkable comeback and late last year was removed from the endangered list and reclassified as threatened.
