REPORT FROM ITALY: SURVEY OF ITALIAN OBSTETRICIANS AND GYNECOLOGISTS ON FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION OF AFRICAN IMMIGRANTS

ABSTRACT: Preliminary results concerning the first epidemiological survey of FGM carried out with Italian obstetricians and gynecologists are presented. Each professional was interviewed during the course of two congresses held in 1993. The physicians worked in the health structures of various Italian regions, enabling us to draw a map of Italy concerning FGM. FGM was widespread, even though it was found to a lesser degree in the northern bordering regions, in some internal areas and in the main islands.
