Peter Shaw, a professor of English who crossed academic disciplines to write a biography of John Adams in the 1970s and then became a leader of the neo-conservative academic movement, died on Thursday at Roosevelt Hospital. He was 58, and lived in New York City.
The cause was heart disease, his family said.
Shaw taught at the State University at Stony Brook from 1965 until 1980, when he retired after suffering a heart attack.
