Stephen Butler, diagnosed with a rare hip condition as a child, lived through four decades of pain. Two years ago, ``I got to the point where I couldn't live with it anymore,'' said the Orlando, Fla., urologist. ``I was ready to have it amputated. I had nothing to lose.''
Butler, 51 at the time, had artificial joints implanted in both his hips. The moment he awoke from his surgery in July 1993 he knew he had done the right thing. ``It's the best thing that happened to me since my first Budweiser. There's a big hole down there where there used to be pain.''
