For doctors, the Hippocratic Oath is like a medical pledge of allegiance, a code for physicians to live by. It's been handed down from one class of medical school graduates to another since the time of Hippocrates, the ancient Greek philosopher who is widely known as the father of medicine.
This oath has been in the news lately. In June, the American Medical Association condemned the lucrative practice of patenting new medical and surgical procedures. Such practices, said the organization, were in clear violation of the Hippocratic Oath.
