WASHINGTON Ever since former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara confessed to early doubts about the Vietnam War, outraged Americans have been wondering why he chose to `fess up so belatedly. They have been raging at him for speaking out too late.
Even now, his timing seems to have been born more of a tortured conscience than some grand national purpose. He sounds as though he simply wanted to get straight with his kids and hope to go to heaven as a good guy after all.
