WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. Spring comes late to the Berkshires. Route 2 winds east and upward from Petersburgh, past stands of white birches among black bare trees.
The view of valleys and far mountains remains deep and unobstructed, even in the first week of May. Soon leaves will cover it over, until you'll have to park on top, at the lookout, to have the panorama.
Then drive on past the welcome sign for Massachusetts, along the winding two-lane descent through the forest, past the scattering of neat country homes, a few landscaped motels and restaurants, and into Williamstown.
