Thomas Merton was a poet, a mystic, a lover of beer and women, a hermit and perhaps the most influential Trappist monk in 10 centuries.
Almost 30 years after his death in an electrical accident in Bangkok, Merton's influence on spiritual seekers shows little sign of abating.
Seminars, college courses, pilgrimages to his home monastery of Our Lady of Gethsemani in rural Kentucky and reprints of his writings all sustain thousands drawn to his life and work.
