This year, some 2.3 million New Yorkers, or an astounding one person in eight, will be on welfare. Without reform, the bill to taxpayers will reach $2.1 billion.
New Yorkers have a proud tradition of caring and compassion for our citizens who are most in need. However, the unbridled growth of well-intentioned welfare programs has taught us that compassion is not a commodity.
