As doubts increase about the wisdom of taking supplements of beta carotene, the Cinderella nutrient of the 1990s, some of its relatives are threatening to walk away with the glass slipper and the prince's heart. Researchers who study the carotenoids, the family of nutrients to which beta carotene belongs, are now thinking that beta carotene may be only partly responsible for the health benefits that have been attributed to it, and that one or more of the hundreds of other carotenoids should be sharing, if not stealing, the limelight.
