The proof that the current system of tracking campaign contributors doesn't work is the latest election.
As New York State Common Cause has recently reported, it's been almost four months since the last election season has ended, and the state Board of Elections has yet to begin auditing the contribution filings of the candidates for state office. That means, first, that no one can yet find out who supported which elected officials and with how much money. More important, no one can yet find out if any of those contributions might have been illegal.
The scrutiny of outsiders is necessary, it would appear, as the Board of Elections does not seem to be ...
