NEW YORK Norman Rosten, a poet, playwright and novelist, died Tuesday at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn. He was 81.
The cause was congestive heart failure, said his daughter, Patricia.
In a diverse career, Rosten published seven volumes of poetry and four novels. His most popular play was ``Mister Johnson,'' an adaptation of the Joyce Cary novel.
Often his work was intertwined with his life as a longtime resident of Brooklyn.
In 1979, Borough President Howard Golden named Rosten poet laureate of Brooklyn, and he retained that title until his death.
