PHILADELPHIA Some people look outside and see unending winter. I am seeing sunflowers. And Brandywine tomatoes, reputed to be the sweetest, most succulent tomato in history.
With unerring timing, the seed and nursery companies start sending out their catalogs when winter seems darkest.
All fall I contemplated giving up my patch in the community vegetable garden. Too much trouble. Who needs all those vegetables, anyway washing the knobby, ill-shaped, tough-as-a-rutabaga carrots, fighting the deer with ever-higher fences for the beets?
