ALBANY -- Ten former college students who were interrogated and searched by police solely because of their African-American heritage are hoping to make state legal history in an extraordinary case to be argued next month.
The case requires the Court of Appeals, New York's highest court, to address a peculiar question of whether the state constitution shields innocent people as well as guilty.
The court will review two lower rulings stemming from a controversial police sweep in Oneonta four years ago, when an elderly woman was attacked and told authorities that she believed the assailant was black.
