NEW YORK -- Of all days for Pete Sampras to play for the U.S. Open title, none could have been more emotionally loaded with sweet memories and lingering pain than Tim Gullikson's birthday.
Sampras' late coach and close friend, who died of brain cancer in May, would have been 45 on Sunday.
