The ten-year history of expert systems in insurance has been turbulent.
There have been expensive failures resulting in no code or software programs sitting unused in computer media libraries.
Yet, today they still rank high in polls of desired technologies.
Once, these systems were viewed as excessively complex and requiring an exceptional development effort.
High expectations for the use of expert systems were tempered by realizing the lack of, but necessity for, systems integration and data sharing.
A major problem with these knowledge based systems has been the data entry chore, frequently needing additional keying.
