Twice in the past year, Ralph and Brian Roberts have felt burned by their partners in QVC Inc. Last week they decided it was time to turn the tables.
By bidding to swallow the shopping network itself and busting up QVC's planned merger with CBS, the Roberts' Comcast Corp. audaciously shattered QVC chairman Barry Diller's latest plan to run a big-time show biz conglomerate on his own terms. At the same time, Comcast sent CBS chairman Larry Tisch scrambling to brace up his own plans to extract money from the company.
Comcast was irritated that the much-praised CBS/QVC deal would shove the MSO into a minor role.
