Jan. 7--In about a month Carolyn Collette will be tossing beads until she is sore, and on Saturday her throwing arm got some practice.
Hundreds of Southeast Texans scrambled for the beads thrown by krewe royalty at the annual Twelfth Night celebration in Port Arthur, which kicks off the city's Mardi Gras season. "Throwing beads is more fun than catching them," said Collette, co-captain of the Majestic Krewe of Aurora. Collette has 32 cases of beads she will throw to the tens of thousands lining the Mardi Gras parade route next month, but she and other krewes' royalty were already in the bead-tossing mood.
