Hank Williams is not only the cornerstone of modern country music, he is also its foundation and the first three floors. Were Williams a museum, those three floors might respectively focus on his writing, his singing and his lifestyle, though the last floor might be off limits to minors. After all, the self-destructive Williams exemplified the ultimate rock-'n'-roll myth -- live fast, die young -- years before that music even existed.

In a recording career that lasted only five years, Williams recorded 66 songs under his own name, writing 50 of them; 39 were country hits, 36 of them in the Top 10.
