Protecting documents from theft is important. But fire protection is an additional consideration when buying a safe to store your valuables. ``When you buy a regular home safe, the UL label usually states that it will provide protection up to 350,'' said Gary Mangione, owner of Joseph P. Mangione Locksmiths in Troy and Saratoga. ``But, today, a lot of people store videos, floppy discs or backup tapes in their safes, too. However, these are more sensitive to heat than paper when the temperature exceeds 125 and/or a relative humidity of 80 percent.''
