Last week's meeting between President Clinton and British Prime Minister Tony Blair could decide the future of Northern Ireland. As a concerned American citizen of Irish extraction, I propose five steps that the British can take and five things our government should do to accomplish peace in Northern Ireland.
Great Britain should:
1. Not renew the Emergency Powers Act, which now governs Northern Ireland. That act is an affront to the civil liberties of every citizen of Northern Ireland. It has taken away jury trials, the right to silence and general safeguards. Consenting to its demise would send a positive signal of ...
