BELFAST, Northern Ireland -- In a bold bit to stem rising violence, Britain's governor for Northern Ireland will visit the high-security Maze prison and meet with some of the province's most notorious killers.
Friday's unprecedented visit by Mo Mowlam aims to preserve a cease-fire by pro-British Protestant paramilitary groups so that political talks on Northern Ireland's future can move forward.
Mowlam announced her intentions Wednesday, just hours after soldiers defused a 500-pound bomb in Banbridge, a predominantly Protestant town southwest of Belfast.
