The war of the noses has broken out early this year.
A record warm spell following the mild winter has trees budding several weeks ahead of schedule. The result is one of the earliest and nastiest opening salvos in the allergy season.
And the evidence is nothing to sneeze at.
``We are seeing record amounts of pollen being released at one time,'' Dr. David Shulan said. In recent years, the pollen count -- the number of pollen grains-per-cubic centimeter -- for maple on March 31 hovered in the low teens. On Tuesday, it was 478.
