It could all have been so different. As the former Iraqi tyrant Saddam Hussein was led to the gallows last weekend, the government in Baghdad -- and its allies in Washington and London -- hoped that it could draw a line under his 25-year reign of terror.
The official newsreel of the event, which was silent, may have been amateurish and somewhat distasteful to Western eyes, but at least it indicated that Saddam had been treated reasonably humanely. As John Simpson, the BBC's World Affairs Editor, said: "It all seemed weirdly calm and dignified."
