New data on the potential impact of using lemon or lime juice vaginally were presented at the Alliance for Microbicide Development's annual meeting in March 2006. A pre-clinical study compared cytotoxicity (cell-damaging effect) and anti-HIV activity of lemon and lime juice to that of the spermicide nonoxynol-9 (N-9). When tested on cervical tissue obtained from routine hysterectomies, lemon and lime juice caused damage to cells comparable to that of N-9.
