Over 1,000 hours of observation in 2000-2001 and 55 interviews were conducted by a researcher seeking to conceptualise the risks and hazards facing women selling sex in a range of settings in Birmingham, UK. Access was gained through a sexual health project for sex workers. Sex workers described their work as including provision of emotional support to clients, a service for men who are socially or physically disabled, preventing men having adulterous affairs, health education and disease prevention, and therapy for sexual dysfunctions.
