National service could be a secret weapon in the fight against crime. I speak from experience. I spent 15 years in Washington, D.C., working for the International Chiefs of Police, the Police Foundation, the Treasury and Justice Departments, and the U.S. Senate to improve the criminal justice system before I moved to Stanford, California, to launch a community service program for college students. After 10 years in California, I became a part of the emerging national service movement at the local, state, and national levels.
