The tools of a hurricane forecaster are at once high-tech and humble. At the National Hurricane Center in Coral Gables, Florida, Miles Lawrence has watched dozens of swirling tropical storms on computer screens and consulted reams of results from the most advanced computer models. But when the hurricane hotlines ring, as they do at the height of the season, the tools Lawrence likes to have close by are a pair of dividers to measure distance, a ruler, a brush for eraser dirt, three sharp pencils colored red, black, and blue, and a large, paper plotting chart.
