Some 55% of Internet-using Americans aged 12-17 use online social networking websites such as MySpace and Facebook, according to a study for the Pew Internet Project (Pew), an organisation producing reports on the impact of the Internet.

The study of 935 teenagers, which was conducted late last year, determined that older teenage girls use the social networking sites to keep in contact with existing friends, whereas boys tend to use the sites to make new friends.
