Behind every great car and car company, there was a man willing to gamble on a fledgling or evolving industry.
Meet some of the more notable of those auto industry pioneers. CHARLES and J. FRANK DURYEA -- Charles was a bicycle builder who designed the first lady's bike. He also held the first U.S. patent for Never-leak, a gummy liquid used to seal punctured tires. His brother, J. Frank (both hailed from Washburn, Ill.), drew up plans for a steam vehicle in 1883, at age 14.
In 1896 the pair produced 13 copies of their Duryea Motor Wagon using the same design and thus gave birth to the auto industry.
