SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Frank Fitzgerald first stepped onto the harness track on Crescent Avenue as a 12-year-old, and came away impressed by the crowds and bustle of activity.
In the 1940s and 1950s, thousands of people, blue-collar workers from outlying mills and dandies from the city, came to the track, eager to bet on the trotters and pacers.
But times have changed. Big crowds don't seem interested in harness racing. It has been a while since 10,000 people pushed through gates to watch horses speed around the half-mile oval track with sulkies in tow.
After 25 years, the all-time attendance record of 14,200 people still stands. This year, the ...
