MANTEO, N.C. -- Hour after hour the traffic crawled by, headlights on, bumper to bumper.
More than 250,000 motorists trekked inland Thursday, one sandy step ahead of Hurricane Bertha, a diminishing but finicky dervish now packing 80-mph winds.
The center of the hurricane will most likely hit Myrtle Beach, S.C., around noon today, but damaging winds will be felt hours earlier along the Carolina coasts, Hurricane Center Deputy Director Jerry Jarrell said.
