Red Mills, located on Route 23 approximately six miles from the Hudson River, was once part of the 870,000-acre manor owned by diamond merchant Kilaen Van Rensselaer.

The area takes its name from the mills that still stand on the Claverack Creek, built for Jacob Rutzen Van Rensselaer in 1767, according to town of Claverack historian Elaine Minnigan. Van Rensselaer was Assembly speaker in 1812.

This hamlet is situated in the Columbia County town of Claverack, approximately 34 miles from downtown Albany.

Red Mills is bordered by Claverack to the west, Route 217 and Columbia Golf & Country Club ...
