In the Clinton administration's harshest criticism of the General Electric Co., the head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Thursday accused GE of conducting a ``public disinformation'' campaign about the dangers of PCBs in the Hudson River.

EPA Administrator Carol Browner, testifying at a state Assembly hearing on her agency's progress in assessing the dangers of the river's PCBs, also accused the corporation of promoting ``politics at its most cynical'' by deploying legions of Washington D.C.-based lobbyists to water down federal Superfund legislation to clean up toxic wastes.
