THIRTY YEARS AGO, a massive paperback directory called the Whole Earth Catalog began its legendary course as the hippie bible of the 1960s. Edited by Stewart Brand from Berkeley, California, the epicenter of that age's counterculture, the catalog was a kind of field guide for the back-to-the-land generation.
In it, you could learn where to find information about any up-the-establishment pursuit you might imagine--from making your own clothes or building a kiln, to yoga instruction to buying or growing herbs. "Access to Tools" was the curt but apt subtitle descriptor for the Whole Earth Catalog series, which was published off and on through the 1980s.
