What is driving up auto insurance rates is not as clear cut as Mark Alessi, Chairman of New Yorkers for Civil Justice Reform, claims in his August 12 letter. While aggressive trial lawyer advertising and auto accident litigation could well be a factor, a special Task Force on Automobile Insurance created by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, which I co-chaired, discovered that insurer greed and nefarious business practices may be much more to blame.
