DHAKA, Bangladesh -- In a nation ruled by military or quasi-military governments for 15 of its 25 years of independence, preserving democracy is always an exercise in reining in the army.
As Bangladesh readies for its election today, the country's generals appear to be in check, co-opted by the fledgling democracy they once opposed.
A military takeover seems unlikely even if violence breaks out at polling stations, as expected, and the voting doesn't end a tense standoff between political parties.
