ALBANY -- Under a melancholy sky and to the mournful strains of the kaddish, the Jewish prayer for the dead, public officials in suits and men in yarmulkes huddled in a city park to honor a Japanese diplomat whose defiance of his government 56 years ago saved thousands of Jews from death.

In Wallenberg Park at Clinton Avenue and North Pearl Street, Jewish leaders and Mayor Jerry Jennings unveiled a plaque honoring Chiune Sugihara. As Japanese consul general to Lithuania, Sugihara in 1940 violated official orders and spent weeks writing visas allowing Jews trapped by the Nazi advance to flee the Holocaust.
