TROY -- Rensselaer County's Cooperative Extension, which has 18 employees, will close its doors for 21 days because it received $53,000 less than the agency budgeted from county funding.

The loss of $53,000, however, is magnified four times in Cooperative Extension's overall $1.2 million budget, according to David Hawley, the agency's executive director.

``For every $1 we lose in county funding,'' said Hawley, ``we lose $4 in state and federal funding because that money is based on county appropriations. So we are actually losing about a quarter of a million dollars.''
