A horticulturist and author plants to weather all the elements--including neighborhood kids
SHE CALLS THEM HELL strips, but Lauren Springer's parkways--the ribbons of earth between the street and the sidewalk--look more like little slices of heaven.
Springer, a professional horticulturist and author, gardens at her home on a 1/3-acre corner property in northern Colorado. With winter temperatures that dip to 30 [degrees] below, summer highs that top 100 [degrees], and only 12 inches of precipitation (including snow) a year, it's astonishing to see the broad range of plants she grows in the parkways--all without irrigation.
