``84 Charing Cross Road'' is an epistolary romance of an entirely different sort.

From 1949 to 1969, New York writer Helene Hanff dashed off one trans-Atlantic letter after another to London's Frank Doel. She never expressed her undying love for Frank. She never pined for his touch. She never let on about what lacy underthings she might be wearing.

Instead she wrote Frank about gilt edgings, leather bindings and the joy of cutting pages in unread volumes of John Donne and Samuel Pepys.
