I am writing because as a dairy farmer I often get asked by my nonfarmer friends why retail milk prices don't drop that much in the supermarket during those times when farmers receive dangerously reduced prices for their milk. For example, this month dairy farmers will receive a reduction of 40 cents a gallon for their milk, marking the second time this year that farm milk prices have experienced huge declines. But you won't see milk prices in the supermarket or convenience stores drop this much; perhaps a few pennies at most.
