BOSTON -- A federal appeals court has ruled that the Northeast Dairy Compact, which boosts minimum milk prices in an effort to help New England farmers, does not violate the U.S. Constitution.

The First Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a claim by the trade association New York Dairy Foods Inc. and several dairy companies that the Northeast Dairy Compact Commission discriminated against dairy firms outside New England by regulating milk prices.

``The Northeast Dairy Compact, what it does and how it does it, received an unqualified stamp of approval,'' the commission said in a written statement Friday.
