For the past year, Poland's media have been awash with revelations about how communist-era secret police pressured Catholic priests into spying on fellow Catholics. The coverage has called into question the church's long-cultivated image as a bastion of heroic resistance.
So when Poland's Catholic bishops set up a commission recently to investigate the church's infiltration by communist agents, there were hopes that this murky issue would be confronted openly and firmly.
Not everyone, though, is satisfied with the church's response. The new commission, some Catholics fear, could cover up as much as it reveals.
