Just before the Thanksgiving holiday, the Whitney Museum of American Art reached an agreement with the City of New York's Economic Development Corporation to buy a site at Gansevoort and Washington Streets in the Meatpacking District, at the entrance to the High Line. A month earlier, the Dia Art Foundation abandoned plans to relocate there [see "Artworld," Dec. '06]. While Dia was to lease the site, the Whitney will purchase two empty buildings (slated for demolition) from the city for half their appraised value.
